We recently tested a laptop from 2012 with 4GB RAM and a spinning hard drive. Most modern titles refused to launch. However, dozens of low spec games worked without any issues. The secret is avoiding any game that requires DirectX 11 or newer. Stick to titles built for older Windows versions – many are still sold today as games for weak PC.
Cleaning the laptop’s cooling fan improved performance noticeably. We also turned off background apps and set the power plan to “high performance”. After these small steps, even optimized games from 2018 became playable at lower resolutions. The experience was not perfect, but it was smooth enough to enjoy story-driven adventures and turn-based strategies.
Our final list of old laptop games for this machine included five RPGs, three platformers, and two puzzle games. None of them crashed. All of them ran above 30 frames per second. This proves that hardware age is not a barrier. You simply need patience and a list of proven low spec games from trusted sources. We will continue sharing such lists every month.
